Hidden Fitzrovia Artist Callout

Fitzrovia Community Centre (FCC) is pleased to announce its latest Artist opportunity, in collaboration with artist and curator Samar F. Zia. We are looking for proposals from creatives to produce a body of work of minimum three pieces for the Fitzrovia: a Visual Portrait exhibition, part of Hidden Fitzrovia, a project that aims to unpeel the layers of history that make up the area’s rich and colourful past. Your art could be based on either the past or present, but it should be a personal experience/view of Fitzrovia as you know it. These pieces will be printed large-scale and displayed publicly on hoardings across the borough of Westminster.

We will be selecting three artists to each make a minimum of three 2-dimensional works. These could be drawing, painting, collage, digital art, mixed media or anything similar.

Details

The development of each artist’s work will be facilitated by 2 one-on-one progress sessions with artist Samar F. Zia during May and June. This is a great opportunity for upcoming artists or those who wish to return to making art after a break, however, the callout is open to all.

The required dimensions of the artwork will be confirmed at the start of the development phase. It will need to align with our printing size of minimum 2 x 3 m.

FCC will provide a stipend of £200 to each artist to produce the works.

FCC will pay for a professional photographer to create high-res digital images of the works which the artist will be able to use.

The artist retains the rights to the work, however, for this project only, FCC will have the works printed at an appropriate scale and will keep the hoardings for any future display.

FCC retains the rights to use the digital images of the artworks in promotional material for Hidden Fitzrovia and other future FCC projects. The artist will be credited at all times. In return, the artist will credit FCC (where appropriate) i.e. mentioning the work was produced as part of a project developed by FCC, funded by Westminster Council. The artist may want to include links to FCC’s website.

The nine final works will be printed onto hoardings and exhibited around the borough of Westminster as part of the Inside Out Festival from the beginning of August 2023, and may remain in situ for as long as the respective building works continue.

There may be further opportunities for the artists to be involved; for example, in promotional events and festivals such as the private view/launch event at FCC, participation in Fitzrovia Fete, a street party planned as part of the Hidden Fitzrovia project, a written blog post as a profile feature on the FCC website, and any other events that come up.
