Fitzrovia: a Visual Portrait public art exhibition

Fitzrovia Community Centre is inviting corporate partners to be involved in its latest arts project, Hidden Fitzrovia. It is a multi-faceted collaboration with local artists and community organisations, for the benefit of all those living in and around Fitzrovia. The project is funded by Westminster Council as part of its Inside Out arts festival in August of this year. It will be FCC’s first foray into a borough-wide festival and it will not only put our centre on the map, but will attract visitors to our area, to walk its streets and experience its unique charm.

As a brief summary, the Hidden Fitzrovia project comprises:

  • A Hidden Fitzrovia walking tour, exploring the hidden depths of Fitzrovia’s past – the good, the bad and the ugly.

  • Art, photography and poetry workshops for local adults, to reveal their own perspectives of Fitzrovia as it is now.

  • A guerrilla postcard ‘exhibition’ of artwork, poetry and tour map.

  • Fitzrovia: a Visual Portrait - a public art exhibition of new work created by artists connected to Fitzrovia – this is the part that will interest developers and construction companies.

  • Finally, we will bring all of this together in the annual Fitzrovia Fete street party, this year run by FCC. It is lively, family-friendly, cultural event which perfectly captures the eclecticism and diversity of the area.

Fitzrovia: a Visual Portrait

In this exciting public art project, we have selected 3 professional artists, both established and emerging, to create 9 new, large-scale, 2-dimensional, public art pieces, developed in collaboration with Samar F. Zia, a local artist who co-curated our Renewal exhibition in 2022. Without giving too much away, their work will highlight a particular aspect of Fitzrovia that is meaningful to them, perhaps its history, its people, or its architecture. These 9 works will be printed in high-resolution dibond and attached to hoardings on construction sites around Westminster, introducing beauty and creativity where there is noise and disruption. The artwork will give Westminster residents, workers and visitors alike a chance to pause and reflect upon a thought-provoking work of art, whilst also learning something new about an area just within walking distance. The works will invite viewers to make their way towards our small but perfectly defined corner of the West End, follow the walking tour, join us at the Fete, and visit us at the Centre.

Invitation

We are inviting our corporate partners in the construction industry to sponsor one or more art pieces to exhibit on their sites in Westminster. They will be installed at the end of July 2023 and the quality of the materials should ensure they last for as long as the site is in use. Alongside the artwork we will display information about the artist, the piece, the project and our organisation. We will include sponsors’ logo alongside the respective pieces and will mention the sponsor in all communications about the project on social media, our newsletter, website and press release.

£750 will cover the cost of printing and installing one art piece with dimensions 1220mm x 2440mm. Hoardings of other sizes can also be accommodated upon request.

The deadline for confirming the sites is 31st May 2023.
